Valuable Reference and Wedding Planning Resource

Wedding Reception Dancers Chrystal Ballroom Biltmore Los AngelesPlanning for a Successful Event.

If a picture is worth a thousand words.  Then I guess a moving picture is worth… more!

Talking about music is fun but trying to describe it really doesn’t replace hearing it; music is something to be experienced.   Seeing a performance on video is a reference and planning tool that helps the listener experience the music and instrumentation.

Harp With StringsThe Elegant Music Web Site has a Video Index.

There is one easy to find page where all of the video are organized by category.  Whether traditional music or something “outside the box” you can see many options and get ideas.

This is a handy link that can be e-mailed to anyone planning a special event.

This is a valuable reference to help anyone become familiar with Elegant Music services and is a step toward choosing music for that special event.

Jazz Trio with Sax and VocalistOkay, so if a picture is worth a thousand words and a moving picture is worth even more, then I guess a live performance is… “Even Better!”

Mini Concert

Part of our service includes coming to our office where we play “Live”.  It is like a mini concert; we answer questions and help fine tune music choices.

Composing and Arranging for Quartet

Very often after hearing music and talking about music ideas come up.  A bride might not have thought that it would be possible to have an ensemble play a favorite song that she only knows as a recording or video; it may be a new concept that such a piece of music could be performed live for her wedding.

In A Secret Place; where ideas come from.

Eric Zimmermann DJ Master of Ceremones, Pianist and Band LeaderCertainly, planning a special event is creative. Really, I don’t think there is such a thing a being “too creative” and to that I would say,”you got an idea? …splurge on it!  Ideas are naturally low in fat and when followed by action are high in moral fiber.

One of my favorite things to do is collect pictures from past events.  These remind me just how fun the event was and I always get more ideas.  So while I collect pictures and thoughts here are some helpful articles.

Enjoy!

Father Daughter Dance

Experienced parents say that “kids grow up fast.” Having 2 of my own I have learned just how true this is and have vowed to never let them out of my sight.

Father Daughter Dance B&W

The Father Daughter Dance

Sure, a wedding is a big deal for a couple but consider the parents. The anticipation, the concern, the utter joy that the parents of the bride and groom experience. An emotional roller coaster eclipsed only by the sigh of relief and sense of accomplishment experienced after the presentation of the couple as husband and wife. It is a triumph.

Congratulations Mr. Nunez!

Dance with your baby!

A wedding is often a formal affair and sometimes kids are not invited; it gives parents a night out with dinner and dancing away from the kids and this sometimes is greatly appreciated.

Kids Dancing @ a WeddingAs a DJ when whole families are invited to weddings (kids too) I suggest that after the Father Daughter Dance / Mother Son Dance that we open the dance floor to everyone with a child. I call it “Dance With Your Baby.” Of course mothers and sons, fathers and daughters can join in on the dance floor but also I encourage aunts and nephews, uncles and nieces. And grand parents can dance with anybody! Kids love to dance and always gets the party started.

Other opportunities for fathers and daughters to get dressed up nicely and go out are sponsored by private organizations holding special events.  Traditionally these are The Cotillion or Debutante Ball and the Father Daughter Dinner Dance. These provide the unique opportunity for fathers and daughters to “cut a rug” together.

Here are some father daughter dance music suggestions:

I Loved Her First, Heart Land

What a Wonderful World, Louis Armstrong

Too Marvelous for Words, Sinatra

Daughters, John Mayer

Just The Way You Look Tonight, Sinatra

Dinner Dance In A Secret Location

In a secret location men finely dressed in white tie and tails and women in beautiful evening dresses met and enjoyed cocktails, amazing food and perhaps wine too and as the evening progressed one thing lead to another and these couples, danced!

Jazz Trio with Sunglasses

Elegant Music Jazz Trio – Incognito – Sunglasses Optional

The secret location had a beautiful steinway grand. Solo piano was featured during the cocktail hour then when dinner chimes sounded String Bass and Drums accompanied the Pianist as doors opened to a beautifully set dining room. The trio struck up “The Way You Look Tonight” a song most notably made famous by Frank Sinatra. Couples entered the ballroom and “took a turn on the dance floor.”

Not ready to sit down just yet guests remained on the dance floor so the trio segued into “Beyond The Sea” a French song with English lyrics made famous by Bobby Darin. The trio took a break so that guests could be seated and the dinner service could begin. After dinner and much lively conversation dancing resumed.

Guided by perfect manners and a common purpose to have a good time everyone seemed to know what to do; men conducted themselves as gentlemen and women conducted themselves as ladies; everyone enjoyed the company of each other; another successful party!

There are private organizations and clubs that observe traditions such as dinner dances. Celebrating ideals of bygone days they meet simply to have a good time. Photography was not permitted.

Elegant Music Live Bands – Introductory Song Lists

Live Bands and Intro Song Lists (Basically, scroll down and find songs you like.)

Sure prerecorded music is fine but there is certainly a magic to a “Live Performance.”  I think there are certain kinds of music that are best appreciated when played by a DJ and other styles that are best appreciated when performed by a band. I would say that Hip Hop and some Top 40 for example are best appreciated by hearing the original recording and so for those tunes, hire a DJ. I think most Rock, Jazz or Chamber Music for example are best appreciated when heard “Live”.

A wedding for example has several parts and each can have its own music and potentially its own ensemble.

  • Wedding Ceremony – Chamber Music Quartet
  • Cocktail Hour – Solo Piano or Duo
  • Grand Entrance – DJ/MC
  • Dinner Music – Jazz Trio or Live Band
  • Dance Music – DJ or Live Band

dance-musicI lead a number of ensembles that perform for parties and weddings throughout Southern California; each has its unique repertoire. It is very creative to match up the audience and purpose of the event with the right ensemble (or DJ music.) When choosing ensembles for each part of your celebration is thoughtfully done the result is pure magic!

Here is an example: As a musician I can play just about any song on the piano. Adding to this Bass and Drums greatly expands what I can play. I have a lot of fun playing with this trio: Keyboard, Bass and Drums. This group all by it self can play just about anything from Jazz Standards and Rock and Roll, and even some Top 40.

Creating a quartet by adding to this trio a Female Vocalist greatly expands music possibilities of this ensemble.

Now add to this quartet (the trio with a Female Vocalist) a guitar/vocalist. With this five piece band the music possibilities expand exponentially.

Ok, so if you’re following along, now add sax to this (trio with a female vocalist and guitarist/vocalist) to create a six piece band and let your imagination work over the possibilities.

To give a better representation of what I am describing here is a partial song list showing several categories/styles of music for dinner and dance music played by the Elegant Music Live Band.

Eric Zimmermann, Practicing Thespian/Actor

Eric with CameraMy name is Eric Zimmermann. I am a DJ and Master of Ceremonies, Pianist and Band Leader. I have been performing all of my life as a professional musician. As a Master of Ceremonies I am very comfortable in front of an audience and so I didn’t think that there was anything to learn about public speaking. However, at the urging of friends I looked into the public speaking club “ToastMasters International” and soon realized that there were some things I didn’t know and so learned many new skills! Since then I have achieved the level of “Competent ToastMaster.” Looking back at this it is kind of funny how, I didn’t know what I didn’t know.

A short time ago (again at the urging of friends) I looked into commercial acting. Right off the bat I booked a variety of work including playing a “wind farm owner” for Key Bank and a knee surgeon for Fauquier Health.   Fauquier Health.  Right after that booked work for Disneyland and Embassy Suites.

My latest role was a businessman for a Japanese cell phone commercial. What is interesting about this one is that at the audition I had to play “Rock, Paper, Scissors” in Japanese. Really, what they wanted was to see was a playful spontaneity. Then, on set we (the other businessmen and women and I) were given simple children’s toys and instructed to figure out new ways to play with them. It was silly and fun. We were told that the director was laughing while viewing the takes and to keep doing what we were doing.

More To Learn?

So thinking there may be more to learn about acting I enrolled in an acting class and last week completed a 2 month study of the basics of “Improv” at The Acting Center right in the heart of Hollywood, CA on the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Western Ave. To say I had an amazing experience would be an understatement. I am so taken by this that I am continuing and have enrolled in the “Scene Study Class.”

Eric Zimmermann Meet The ArtistTonight @ 8:00 PM my class will be performing; kind of like our final exam or acting recital; they call it an acting salon. We will be sharing the stage with some of the other very talented students of this amazing school.  The Acting Center 5514 Hollywood Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90028.   Phone:  (323) 962-2100

So yes, I admit it. I am a practicing thespian!

The Story of Elegant Music by Eric Zimmermann Los Angeles, California

Sheila and Eric Zimmermann Elegant Music 1990

Sheila and Eric Zimmermann Elegant Music 1990

My wife Sheila and I were married in New York City on November 7th 1987. About two months before our wedding a friend of mine announced that he was getting married (before me.)  Inspired by all of this I wrote a piece for Flute and Piano called “The Wedding Song”.

Sheila and I performed this piece at my parents home in Toms River New Jersey during one of our wedding receptions …and people liked it. And then we performed again at another of our wedding receptions, this time in Addison, a suburb of Chicago, where Sheila’s parents lived …and people liked it.

Getting married had had a profound effect on Sheila and I; it was the right thing to do. This was something we did that made us happy. Then it seemed that everyone we knew were also getting married so as a gift Sheila and I performed at several weddings of friends …and people liked it.

Sheila and Eric Zimmermann Founders of Elegant MusicWe had such a good time performing at our own wedding and for friends at their weddings that in moving to Los Angeles in 1990 we decided to continue to perform professionally.

We started out as “The Zimmermann Duo.” That didn’t sound right, even to me. I came up with the name “Elegant Music.” It is interesting that upon hearing us perform we consistently receive the compliment, “It is elegant music!”

Over the years we have grown to include many music services: Duos, Trios, Quartets, Jazz, Live Bands and DJ Dance Music and Professional Announcing.

We would love to hear from you. Thank you for being in touch!

Sincerely,  Eric and Sheila Zimmermann Elegant Music

Another additional service is DJ dance music with dance floor surround sound.  A usual DJ sets up only 2 speakers.  With a 2 speaker setup dance music tends to bounce all over the room making the atmosphere too loud.

With a 4 speaker setup dance music is focused on the dance floor where the dancers are and unfocused sound is not bouncing all over the room.  The 4 speaker surround sound setup also works well in outdoor locations.  There is a big difference with 4 Professional JBL EON speakers.
